This is the largest chapter of the book and is due to the complexity of understanding which
exists to be able to comprehend and predict the operation of an electrical circuit and electronic
control.The chapter is broken down into basic electrical theory, circuit operation, sensors and
actuators, testing and three case studies. Readers can be selective with the text depending on
electrical experience; if unsure start at the beginning.

Fundamental to understanding and predicting circuit operation is applying the simple rules
of electrical theory, knowledge of sensors and actuators, ability to use the correct test equip-
ment to gain the right results and understanding how to read wiring schematics.A number of
wiring diagrams have been broken down into simple electrical circuits with meters and are
presented using Crocodile Clips to aid their explanation. This software can be purchased via
the internet (www.crocodileclips.com) and can help the learner experiment with electrical
circuits.

The aim of this chapter is to:
  • understand basic electrical theory;
  • understand the electrical laws behind the operation of parallel, series and compound circuits;
  • be able to read a wiring diagram and predict circuit operation;
  • understand the underpinning principles behind sensors, actuators and electronic control;
  • allow the learner to apply the knowledge gained from the last two chapters in understanding the operation of the systems and appropriate methods of testing.
